(Answer) (Category) Linux on PowerPC FAQ-O-Matic : (Category) MkLinux :
Why can't I read a floppy in DR3?
Floppy support wasn't available in the stock DR3 mach kernel. Development
kernels with early support were available around Thanksgiving, 1998, and
the first release kernel (GENERIC #06) with floppy support was released early
on the morning of Dec. 28th.

Floppy support ONLY works on PCI PowerMacs at the moment, though support is
in progress for other systems.
