Slow IDE controllers on beige g3?
I recently picked up a Seagate ATA/66 disk and installed linux/ppc on it (disk is installed as Master on primary drive controller). I recompiled both the linux-pmac-2.2.10 and the regular kernel.org distro of linux-2.2.16, then speed-tested the new disk with both. Both times it gets 1.88 megs/second on disk reads (using hdparm -t drive). I also have a few other drives, most of them are pretty good, but they never go faster than 1.88megs/second under linuxppc (they all do between 5-10 on a PC running linux, though). I tested this disk under MacOS 8.5 using the norton system info util, and the disk gets 5 MB/second or better on every test that it does. I've also tried playing around with hdparm, trying a variety of settings to get the drive to go faster, all to no avail. Anyone out there seen similiar behaviour? Have a solution to speed up the disks?

Before using hdparm I had ca. 7.3 Mbyte/sec. (don't know the disk now) I have used hdparm with -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 and got lot of file-system-corruption in Linux even after switching back! Is there an incompatibility between hdparm and the Apple-IDE-Chips?

Well, not sure that there's a compatibility problem -- I also tested by copying a 700 meg file from one disk partition to the other, which does a transfer of 1.7 megs/second or so (slightly slower as it has to read and write the data, I guess). Seems to me that it's definitely something to do with the controller drivers not being quite so optimized (or the controllers just sucking entirely, but I thought they were ata/33). hdparm looks pretty accurate in its reporting, at least for me......

they're ata2(EIDE), not ultraDMA(ata 3,4,5) so it's 16.6MBs
