When trying to boot into Linux on my PowerMac 5400/120 using BootX, it would always hang when (presumably) looking for the hard drive/other devices. I was able to get around that problem by including a Linux swap partition and positioning the Linux partitions ahead of the MacOS partition. The configuration that ended up working was: partition 5 - 1000MB MkLinux (called "/"), partition 6 - 128MB MkLinux (called "swap"), and partition 7 - 450?MB HFS+ (called "Mac"). That got me past the first hang up, but now I'm running into another hangup with the Yellow Dog Linux installer as it looks for the CD-ROM drive. Hope this helps.
