RPM's not installing... false downloads
Okay, I spent 12+ plus hours straight yesterday, at the computer, attempting to install linux (sound familiar?) onto my revC imac. I used the LinuxPPC 1999 Q3.bin. I followed the steps on the guide at www.linux.com very closely and every part of the process seemed to go well until i rebooted without the ramdisk: the infamous Kernal panic: No init found. Try passing init: option to kernal. I tried again, then i tried and added "init: option" to kernal arguments. didn't work so i rebooted to ram disk and tried to install the files again. Oh, an important detail: I'm using the download via WWW option.
After several reboots and download tries I realize that I'm not hearing any real hard disk action going on.
I also nocticed other people on various list archives had reported similar observations. So I tried the install again, this time watching the output very carefully... ahaha!!! As far as I can tell I got an error after every single prm! This download had been taking ten or so minutes on a cable modem so on the previous attempts I had assumed that the download was indeed happening. That nice little progress bar and the visions of files dancing by had helped that illusion.
Would this explain why I can't get beyond "Kernal panic..."?
One last note, after reading of similar problems that others were having I was very careful, just before "downloading" the files to check the format boxes and I typed in "/" not "root", a mistake some have made which causes similar problems. I also downloaded and have tried two versions of BootX.
Is it possible that the installer program is not downloading? Any advice on what I can do next?
