Kernel Panic no Init Found NEW NEW
Hello, I have just tryed to install LinuxPPc on my mac Yosemite 350. I have installed all software, following the procedure instruction, but When I reboot my Mac at the end of kernel initialization I receive the message: Kernel Panic no init found. I repeat that I have following all instruction for the installation, but I have this problem.
I have already install the System Software and all default software. I have configured BootX For the start from Boot Linux Disk that is "sda5" (is a external hard disk, intialised with drive setup and attached to a Mac by a Power Domain Controller Adaptec 2930) Please help me.
Bye and Thank

I had the same problem trying to install R5 onto my BW G3. Using the MountX extension, I decided to check my Linux Root partition, and found that it contained no files, even though I had just gone through the entire red-hat install process. I tried to install again, and had the same problem. I figured that the redhat installer was not formatting the drive correctly, so I used the Mac version of Fdisk to do all my formatting. The third time (after using the Mac fdisk) finaly worked. Hope that helps!

I have a Performa 6400/200 with linuxPPC 1999 booting off the internal ATA drive and I get the same error, I had used boot x 1.0.1 and the newest kernel with R4 and it would load, but now it does not boot linuxPPC 1999 with the newest boot X. Help !!!! Please!!! R.S.V.P. A.S.A.P.
Ditto here... I have a PowerMac 8600/200. After following all the installation instructions, I got the same message "Kernel Panic no init found". I was wondering if it has anything to do with the system being unable to discover the location of the root install disk?
I'm having the same problem. 333 MHz iMac w/1.1 GB partition to the LinuxPPC, 500 MB to the swap. Ran all according to directions for Xinstaller/LinuxPPC Live 1999Q3 Installer. Get the same response. If I'm supposed to see the LinuxPPC partitions on the MacOS desktop, I'm not. The only way I'm seeing them is via pdisk. If anyone has an answer, I'd be most grateful. -- LD
Okay, I figured out a way to make it work, and it is *not* exactly as it's stated online. Here goes: I opened up the Linux1999 installer, and went into pdisk /dev/hda. From there, I did the "p" command to look at the drives. All of them had the Apple_UNIX_SRVR2 (?) attribute. One was named for root, the other for swap. I made the root go back to an Apple_HFS drive, and opened it up in MacOS. I took all of the installer stuff and put it into another HFS (not HFS+) partition and trashed the originals. I went back into the Linux installer, and pdisk. From there, I deleted the drive, and instead of "c 6p", I made it "C 6p" which allowed me to not only name the drive, but also the attributes. I tried to make it a Free Space, but wasn't allowed. However, after making the changes, it did take. I was then able to use "N" to change the name to root. From there, I used the "w" command to write. Got the annoying failed message, and typed "q" to quit. I then rebooted, and all was well. I continued using the Linux1999 installer, and it took. One word of advice on the password section: If you make your password with numbers, you'll be able to enter them from the QWERTY section of your keyboard, but not your keypad on an iMac. Make certain you log in first as root and then your password. It should work just fine after that. My question is why the drives can't be mounted on a Mac OS desktop? I thought the Swap drive was to allow the exchange of files between OS's. Also, I'm having a bugger of a time getting the modem init right. I'll look in another section for that. --LD
What is the name if the fdisk program for the mac?
Well, I'm having the same problem with an iMac 333. R5 v2 worked fine with the install software provided (BootX was 1.10 if I remember right), but if I tried to do an install with 1.13 of BootX downloaded from the web, the installation would not work. In that instance, I would get Xserver killed unexpectedly. With Q3 the installer is packaged with 1.13 of BootX and am having problems as mentioned. I removed Q3 installation and resinstalled R5 v2 and it worked fine with BootX 1.10 (on v2 disk) but not with 1.13 (on Q3 disk). My supposistion is that there is something wrong with BootX 1.13. I will be testing this supposition tonight by attempting to install Q3 with BootX 1.10. I will also be calling LinuxPPC to see if they have any info. I will post solution if it works...
Me again,
Yes, it would appear that the problem is in fact the LinuxPPC 1999 Q3 installer on the CD rom. It is some 200K while the same installer on the web site is some 4.1 MB. I used the installer from the web page, and it worked just fine. Incidentially, the BootX in the archive on the web page is 1.11, NOT 1.13 like the installer on the CD rom. You will need to REFORMAT your volumes before you attempt to reinstall, otherwise you'll still get that INIT message.
One more time,
Jeff Carr tells me that the actual problem is an issue with the USB in Rev D 333 iMacs. They are in the process of compiling a new kernel. However, in the mean time, please feel free to attempt the previously mentioned "fix." I still can't get sound to work tough -- other than CD audio...
Cheers
I know it's unrelated, but I got sound to work too. Turn it on through the Enlightenment Configuration control panel.
Ok,
I've also upgraded BootX 1.11 to 1.13 from it's own web page as well, and Q3 continues to work, so Jeff Carr is right (no suprise there [grin]). the problem must lie in the compiled Kernel on the Q3 Cd Rom. Don't use it!
