Booting Woes Galore!
Here are my troubles installing and booting Linux PPC on my graphite iMAC DV SE. Bear in mind, I have OS9, rather than 9.04. So I am led to believe from everything I’ve read that I don’t need to use yaboot.
Yaboot seems quite complex, and the links off of LinuxPPC.org seem to suggest that I need to boot into Linux to edit yaboot.compf. If I could boot into Linux, I wouldn’t need the yaboot solution.
Now I’m thinking my only hope is editing my Open Firmware. Please, anyone! Help!
Where shall I begin. For starters, I am using the bootable CD I bought from Linux PPC. Now, I’ve read the Install PDF on the CD so many times I’ve practically memorized it. And no matter what configurations I try, it just does not work.
First, I tried booting into Linux from the CD. I got the penguin icon, then it ran through a series of commands. What’s most important is, it interrupted out through my partitions until it hit hda10 – my HFS partition – then tried to load the Linux installer to no avail. The next two lines said I needed to repartition the drive and run the install.pl. It them proceeded a never ending interrupting out of my partitions.
So I nixed that idea and decided to repartition my drive with the Mac Drive Setup. I set up boot, swap and HFS and tried the BootX. To no avail. Now, when I load into Linux, it just blacks out my screen, shuts down the box and it tries recovering about 2 minutes later. Only the drive spins but nothing happens.
I even tried manually dragging all the elements of the BootX installer directly onto the drive from the CD, per the instructions on the PPC install PDF. Again, to no avail.
